You wouldn't know it from looking at this painting, but I used more colors than you would think to paint this one. White, cad red, ultramarine blue, orange, yellow, raw sienna, and yellow ochre.

Navel Orange
I did this painting as a demo focusing on light and shadow for my class with Community Education. The form is very simple, a spherical shape that illustrates light and shadow very well. This painting is available for purchase. Ok, so I have too been tagged by 2 artists, I didn't mean to be slow about it. It just seems that there are a BILLION things to be done in one day/week. Like paint... : )
The artists who tagged me are a talented architect/artist Elizabeth Floyd and Mike Rooney, who was just published in a new book about plein air painting, thank you, I appreciate very much being tagged.
The rules of being tagged are:
1. Link to person who tagged you
2. Mention the rules
3. List 6 or 7 unusual things about yourself or quirky but boring, unspectacular details about yourself
4. Tag 6 or 7 other bloggers at the end of your post and comment on their blogs to let them know they've been tagged
Here goes:
1. I love my ipod. I mostly listen to music, but also books.
2. My studio is very SMALL. People walk into it and say, wow this just proves you don't have to have a large studio to paint.
3. I am intrigued by marketing my artwork. I can't say that I know what I'm doing, but it is interesting.
4. I love my car too. It's a subaru outback, good for plein air painting and hauling paintings around. I hope subaru will make an outback hybrid or something like that in the future.
5. I have a dog.
6. I do yoga.
Tag 6 or 7 bloggers ( I don't know if these people have already been tagged) I guess if you have already been tagged, you just ignore the tag?
Irina Koslova, Daniel Garcia, Celeste Bergin, Darren Maurer, Jeff Mahorney, Donna Van Tuyl

I like to really discover a subject sometimes, just paint it several times until I feel like I know it very well. I might have to go to the store and get more persimmons to paint, these are getting a little mushy.

It seems like each season has interesting fruit for painting. Persimmons are a nice, fallish orange. On this painting, I was paying particular attention to forms and the relationship of the shadows and values. Really not so much color, the color just sort of happens, if you concentrate on values.

These apples are from a friend's tree. I think that's the only way you get the leaves with the apples. They are some really small variety of apple. They were a challenge to paint, because the red is so deep, it's almost wine colored.

This painting is a demo from a class that I taught today. I liked the way it turned out, with the minimum of brush strokes to define the form. I was trying to count the brushstrokes, a max of 20 brushstrokes per form.

I have been experimenting with different brushes and colors for trees and sky. Today I used Napthol Red instead of Cadmium Red in this painting. I have heard that the Napthol Red doesn't gray down like the Cadmium Red. So that's what I used today. I think I like it. It makes a very nice muted purple too. The Langnickel Royal Sable brushes really do seem to do a better job on the trees and sky for me.

Tree at Maryhill Museum - SOLD
The tree overlooks the Columbia River. This painting is of the view from The Maryhill Museum in Goldendale, Washington. A group of 30 of us painted there during the Plein Air 2008 event that is on display at the Columbia Center for the Arts this month. This plein air event continues to provide inspiration for me in the daily paintings.
