You wouldn't know it from looking at this painting, but I used more colors than you would think to paint this one. White, cad red, ultramarine blue, orange, yellow, raw sienna, and yellow ochre.

Snowed in. Maybe more snow than I have ever seen at my house. Over 12 inches. Lots of cool things to paint in my house though. Like these inspiring little peppers.
Grapes are a little transparent. What a challenge they are.

The fall colors have been good here this year.
Rowena has some high cliffs that go about 1000 feet up. The vegetation is at the level of the Columbia River, and is a mixture of desert and forest.

I like to really discover a subject sometimes, just paint it several times until I feel like I know it very well. I might have to go to the store and get more persimmons to paint, these are getting a little mushy.
The color of the hills peeking through trees is a fascination of mine.
More persimmons, they are just too beautiful not to paint.
It seems like each season has interesting fruit for painting. Persimmons are a nice, fallish orange. On this painting, I was paying particular attention to forms and the relationship of the shadows and values. Really not so much color, the color just sort of happens, if you concentrate on values.
Working with shadows is one of my favorite challenges.
I didn't think up painting cosmetic still lifes, lots of people do them, but they are very fun to paint! And the names of the colors, you can't make names like that up!

This is a crabapple. I liked the leaves and the shadow on this one.
These apples are from a friend's tree. I think that's the only way you get the leaves with the apples. They are some really small variety of apple. They were a challenge to paint, because the red is so deep, it's almost wine colored.
I'm still working with the idea of keeping the the lights in the light and the darks in the dark on this one.

These red pears seem to be in season now, they are in all the grocery stores. Hood River Valley is a significant pear producing region.
This painting is a demo from a class that I taught today. I liked the way it turned out, with the minimum of brush strokes to define the form. I was trying to count the brushstrokes, a max of 20 brushstrokes per form.
This was a 3 hour painting session with a live model.Trying to stay with neutral colors for this one.

I have been experimenting with different brushes and colors for trees and sky. Today I used Napthol Red instead of Cadmium Red in this painting. I have heard that the Napthol Red doesn't gray down like the Cadmium Red. So that's what I used today. I think I like it. It makes a very nice muted purple too. The Langnickel Royal Sable brushes really do seem to do a better job on the trees and sky for me.
I like trying to find the right sky holes to paint.

This is a little garden shed where our group painted today.
Pomegranates are uniquely intensely pinkish red. It is a challenge to capture that red.
Three apples, three colors (red yellow and blue), musical tones, there is supposedly some sort of psychophysical theory about harmonies of threes. Probably someone out there knows more about this than me.
Goldendale Washington is beautiful in a big sky, desert kind of way.

I like the challenge of trying to make the lemons look transparent, and to get the shadows light enough to look like a little light is coming through, and dark enough to look like a shadow.
This is another commissioned piece. The commissioned pieces have been a lot of fun to create. There are a lot of different kinds of trees in this area. Oaks, poplars, firs, spruce, ponderosa pines, the list goes on...
