Klickitat River

6"x6" | oil on archival linen panel

My husband and I have been kayaking a lot recently on the local rivers, and I have been getting lots of inspiration from our adventures. The perspective from the boat is a great "point of view" too.

Early Morning Farm Road

5" x 7" | Early Morning Farm Road

It is so idyllic, the road is just everything you could want in a Pacific Northwest farm road. Distance, fir trees, sun, long shadows...

5x7 size called out to me for this one.

I went outside early this morning to paint in a local organic orchard. We arrived at 7:30am, the temperature was so pleasant in the morning, and the light was beautiful.

Black and White Tree Study, The Dalles Mt Ranch

9"x12" | Painted on Shellacked 70lb Bee Paper

I have no idea if there is any interest in my black and white studies, so I am starting the bidding at $1. The painting is on Shellacked Bee Paper, it is archival. I have never posted a painting online on paper, so I am starting the bidding at $1 to see where it goes. The shipping will still be $10 domestic, and $25 international.

I had a blast doing it. The fun thing about b/w studies is, your brushstrokes are completely naked! there is no color to distract your attention from them!

The painting is a study of an oak tree on the historic Dalles Mt Ranch.

Mt Hood With Rhodies - sold

6"x6" |  oil on archival panel
This painting is a commission in a series of landscape paintings that I have been working on. I love commissions because they are usually something I would have never thought of! This is the view of Mt Hood from Portland on a clear day, with Rhododendrons.

Nasturtiums "Empress of India"

6"x6" | oil on archival panel
I grew these nasturtiums because I wanted to paint them! I love the way they look! They are a beautiful flower, I think you can eat them too. The "Empress of India" variety, has dark green leaves and deep red orange flowers.

Lemon Shadows

6"x6" | oil on archival panel
I am having a great time, experimenting with different color combinations for these lemons! I am currently reading the book by Charles Reid on Oil Painting Flowers. It talks about different pigments and what he uses them for, and the importance of values! I guess you can't say it enough. For the various yellows of the lemons today I was using (mostly), Cad Yellow Light, Cad Yellow Medium, Cad Orange, and Cerulean Blue... instead of Ultramarine. For the delicate changes in the yellow, the Cerulean seemed to work the best. Charles Reid also says Cad Orange is essential, you can mix it, but it just doesn't come out the same. I would have to agree!

Maryhill Museum Art Party Oil Painting Class was a big success
The Thursday evening Art Party at Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Washington was well attended, there was lots of wine and big fat brushstrokes of oil paint were abundant at the art party. I had talented first time oil painter students and experienced painters .

If you haven't seen the new wing of the Maryhill Museum in Goldendale, Washington, it is worth the visit. The sculpture in the garden, the exhibits inside, the new cafe in the new wing, and it is a stunning drive anytime of year, along highway 14, the smooth desert hills and the road winding through them, along the Columbia River makes for a spectacular drive. The whole drive and experience is incredibly inspiring.
