Made in Italy - sold

The orange cup is so cool, almost too cool to paint. It's made in Italy, my painting buddy, pastel artist Karen Watson, loaned it to me for some still life inspiration.

Nuances of Light - sold

I was quite inspired when I saw Carol Marine's little white angel painting arrive in my inbox, having just painted a white ceramic object (white ceramic coffee cup) next to a slice of orange that same day.
So I decided for today's painting, to paint the coffee cup and orange slice again, this time with a much lighter value scale, to see what would happen. It's always surprising, the results with the challenges you give yourself. I ended up using mostly purple, yellow, orange and burnt umber, to modify the white (ok, some ultramarine blue too). Those colors are complements in an analogous sort of way, on the color wheel.

The Green Bowl - sold

This is a really cool Bowl/Vase that is re-purposed from a giant green bottle. I'm not sure what kind of bottle it was. Maybe originally a magnum wine bottle? Anyway, I got it at Lucy's Informal Flowers and it's so cool. It makes a great subject to paint.

Two Pomegranates - commission

This painting is a commission for a person in the UK. It's so great now that artists can sell work all over the world directly from their studios.
I used a different brush on this one than I normally use. The paint is a little thicker and gives it a more luscious impasto look to it.

The Shapes of Trees

12" x 48" ::  cradled wood panel 2" deep
The shapes of trees fascinate me. I have had this idea in mind for a painting, since this summer, to paint on wood, and have the wood show through as part of the light values in the painting. It's hard to see in a photo, but the light color of the actual wood is showing through in parts of the painting. The wood has two coats of shellac as a clear gesso.

This painting is available at the Columbia Center for the Arts, 215 Cascade Ave, Hood River, OR  541 387 8877

The First Friday Opening Reception is this evening from 6pm - 8pm, hope to see you there!

Pearl District Composition - sold

I am exploring painting some colored glass for variety in the compositions with the grapes. I bought the red glass from an antique store in the Pearl District in Portland, it's very cool. Everything in the painting came from the Pearl District! Turquoise glass is always fun to paint, when ever I can find it.

Gorge Trees - available

Part of a Columbia Gorge Tree Series I am working on... I am painting this series on wood, that shows through the light parts of the painting, in the sky and the foreground. I think the wood showing through has an interesting look to it as part of the overall composition.

16"x20" :: oil on 3/4 inch cradled basswood :: can be hung without a frame, it would also look great framed in a floater frame.

The Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2011 Show was in it's 7th year, and it was a very fun, rewarding show to do again. It's always fascinating to me, how we start out on the first day of painting (5 days of painting) with no art show, and after 5 days, we have a wonderful show. There were 40 participants in the show this year. I made lots of new painter friends from the group. Our show juror was Jim Lamb, PAPA member.
If you want to check out how it went - day by day - here is the blog address for the event:

This year, I won 2 awards! Vintner's Pick Award for the painting I did in the vineyard, "Morning Glow in the Vineyard" and Artist's Choice Award, "Oaks at Laurel's House".
And there is one painting still available for purchase after opening night : Oaks and Yellow Starthistle 8x10
