My Favorite Rose - sold

I am busy practicing my roses for the Invitational Plein Air Event at the Portland Art Museum, Aug 4 & 5. I am really happy with this one.
I went to Portland last week, to check out the area around the Park Blocks and Museum, and do some painting on location, before the event.

I was invited, along with 49 other fabulous regional painters to paint at the Museum for 2 days (Aug 4&5) and then sell the work at the Museum on Aug 5. There are many things to paint in the Park Blocks at the Museum, roses, trees, people...

A Rose From My Garden - sold

I was very inspired to paint roses, following my visit last week to the Portland Art Museum (PAM). Franz Bischoff is one of my favorite painters of the California Impressionists, he was called "King of the Rose Painters". One of his rose paintings is in the show, at the PAM - California Impressionists, 60 Paintings from the Irvine Museum. On Aug 4 & 5, PAM is having an Invitational Plein Air Event on the grounds on of the Museum, 50 regional painters will be painting on Aug 4 &5. I'm sure this is a first time event for PAM, but I hope there will be more events like this one. And there is a large garden at the museum which I am sure lots of artists will be painting, with roses of all colors in full bloom! Portland isn't called "City of Roses" for nothing. It will be fun! So come check it out if you have time.
And yesterday, Carol Marine painted a stunningly beautiful rose for her daily painting.

1119 SW Park Avenue - Mark Building - sold

This is a door to part of the Portland Art Museum. I was painting outside in the park across from the PAM today. The PAM is hosting the first invitational plein air event to celebrate their California Impressionism Exhibit from the Irvine Museum in California. The dates for this event are; August 4 & 5. I am very excited to be one of 50 artists invited to participate in this first ever event!
I have always liked painting architecture, this building has some history! It was originally built in 1925, as a Masonic Temple. It was a rock concert venue in the 60's and is now part of the Portland Art Museum. (I read that THE DOORS played there!) The building is now known as the Mark Building.

Cherries on Curry - sold

I love the intensity of the reds on the curry color. In this painting I am working on "lost and found edges", the colors of shadows, and getting a painterly feeling overall in the final result.

Dark Cherries - sold

Dark Cherries :: 6"x6" :: oil on archival panel

Complementary colors just speak to me. They are at opposite ends of the color wheel, yet they work together so well. I love to see reds and greens of all values and colors together.

Emily :: Graphite on Toned Paper

Emily :: Graphite on Toned Paper :: 2003

I used to do a lot of Portrait Drawing, from live models. A group of artists would get together and we would hire a model to sit for us for about 3 hours. I hope I can find the time to get back to it sometime. This drawing was featured in American Artist Drawing Magazine in 2005.

Sunflower and Stripes - sold

6"x6" :: oil on panel
Neutral stripes and a sunflower.  The stripes in the shadow are just a whole new challenge. I think I like doing stripes and want to do more!

Side note: I am a "brush geek". I like to try out lots of new brushes. Different brushes all seem to do something a little different. This brush I used Silverbrush Bristlon, is what Carol Marine recommends in her Materials ArtByte. It is the first time I have tried the Silverbrush brushes, and I like them a lot. The Bristlon has synthetic bristles, but acts kind of like a natural hog bristle. It's sort of the perfect combination of synthetic and natural bristle feel. I also like the brushes that Richard Schmid uses, the Royal Langnickel flats. They seem to make really interesting unpredictable edges.

Dots and Apples :: 6"x6" :: oil on panel
So they don't really look like "dots" do they? Maybe they are impressions of dots…

Plein Air Oil Sketch, George Rogers Park, Lake Oswego, Oregon

This is a plein air oil sketch of the beauty of the park situated on the banks of the Wilamette River in Lake Oswego, Oregon. I did this one last year with a group of Portland plein air painters. We had fun getting together and seeing what everyone came up with.

Luscious Apple - sold

It's been a while since I have painted an apple. Just wanted to paint this beautiful apple that came from one of our local farms.
In painting this one, I really enjoyed leaving a little background showing through, and doing my best to make this apple glow.

Sunny Morning at Ground Coffee Shop

Ground Coffee Shop :: 6"x6" :: oil on archival panel :: unframed
Plein Air Painting in downtown Hood River, Oregon. This place is an institution in Hood River. It's been a coffee shop of some sort forever I think. A few remodels and owners later, it's now known as "Ground Coffee Shop". It's a complex scene, so I did a sketch with pen and ink before I did the painting. The car moved just when I got out the paints!

Alive with Pink! - not available

Painting in a Gardening Store in Hood River, OR. Beautiful Rhododendrons. I'm not sure, but I think this rhododendron is called Marie Forte. It was a spectacular day to paint at Good News Gardening this morning, with the other plein air painters. Not too much wind this morning, and beautifully sunny.

Retro Cups :: 6"x6" :: oil on panel
The green glass is from a cool little retro/vintage store in the Pearl District in Portland, OR called Porch Light. I have found several great little things to paint in this store. I really love painting translucent objects too.
