The Shapes of Trees

12" x 48" ::  cradled wood panel 2" deep

The shapes of trees fascinate me. I have had this idea in mind for a painting, since this summer, to paint on wood, and have the wood show through as part of the light values in the painting. It's hard to see in a photo, but the light color of the actual wood is showing through in parts of the painting. The wood has two coats of shellac as a clear gesso.

Gorge Trees - available

Part of a Columbia Gorge Tree Series I am working on... I am painting this series on wood, that shows through the light parts of the painting, in the sky and the foreground. I think the wood showing through has an interesting look to it as part of the overall composition.

16"x20" :: oil on 3/4 inch cradled basswood :: can be hung without a frame, it would also look great framed in a floater frame.

Eastern Columbia River Gorge - SOLD

Someone left the comment that I had not written what I was thinking when I painted this one. I was thinking mostly about values - to make objects/forms come forward and go back into space. Atmosphere, the hills far away in the desert are a muted grayed down blueish, and as they come forward they get more color. It's way too cold here to paint outside, so I did this painting from a photo I took during the spring from the Mosier Tunnels Trail. I just felt like I really needed to paint a landscape for a change. And I had just gotten a new brush that is an inch wide, that I was trying out.

Trees in the Columbia Gorge - sold

Rowena has some high cliffs that go about 1000 feet up. The vegetation is at the level of the Columbia River, and is a mixture of desert and forest.
