#847 Flowery Challenge

​Flowers are just so overwhelmingly beautiful, and yet some of the most difficult things for me to paint. They are bright, yet have shadows, and at the same time, the petals and leaves in the shadow can be translucent, and filled with light. Could anything be more challenging? whew. hence the title...

#845 Horsethief Lake Park

It was an exciting day painting at Horesethief Lake Park today. The weather was perfect, our painting group got all set up to paint, and then there was smoke coming from the west... A small grass fire had started from the train tracks and was blowing our direction. So we packed up, and took a little field trip to Horsethief Butte. We hiked around some and we could see the fire from up high, and we watched the firemen put it out. The views from the Butte are just stunning. I really can't believe what great photos the iPhone takes. We decided to go back to the park and get some painting done! And this is what I did. You can see the Butte off in the distance behind the grove of Locust Trees.

I have been saving these Stumptown Cold Brew bottles, they look so interesting with the light coming through them.
I'm also trying out a new panel to paint on. I have a photo of the back, below. It is 1/2" thick and has a keyhole on the back so that you don't have to frame it to hang it on the wall.

#841 Tranquil Morning on the Hood River

I am so happy to be doing my "daily paintings" again. It has been an incredibly busy summer so far. I was just talking with a painter friend, I love doing the little daily paintings, they are sometimes sketches, detailed paintings, explorations, exercises, whims... just what ever I feel like painting at that time. This painting is from a demo for the Tuesday Class that I have in Hood River.

I have gotten a new camera, a Nikon D5500, hopefully the color quality for the photos of my paintings will be even better than before. I'm still trying to figure out the new camera, for photographing artwork.

I have started numbering the paintings, because I am getting excited about getting to #1000! It motivates me to paint more and get there faster!

#840 Crater Rock on Mt Hood

I'm working on a large version of this painting, Pulpit Rock on Mt Hood. This is a small oil sketch of the larger painting. Same color families, and shadow patterns as the large version. Sometimes it is helpful to work out colors and values in the smaller versions, then go back to the larger version and see how they relate to each other.

This painting is from a hike along the Klickitat Trail in Washinton. Swale Creek is the most remote section of the trail. The creek is a series of tepid pools among mineral stained rocks. We were on a bridge overlooking the creek below.
